Iesha
Iesha, a Chatham native, came to One On One last spring searching for a job that gave her purpose. At 24 years old, she was employed, but as a patient services representative for an eye doctor. She wasn’t utilizing the skills she gained while studying Communications at Columbia College.
Through the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services’ Year Round Employment program, One On One placed Iesha with True Star, a long-standing partner and media company that empowers young people. Iesha started as social media coordinator, and this past winter, True Star promoted her to a full-time communications coordinator.
“I’m very happy at True Star,” said Iesha, who claims she would not have gotten the job without the professional development provided by One On One. “What I like about True Star is that we have a voice and can give back to the community by expressing ourselves.”
Due to this experience, Iesha’s new goal is to create her own organization that gives back to young Chicagoans, similar to the work that True Star Co-Founders DeAnna McLeary-Sherman and Na-Tae’ Thompson do.
